“Just let them fly as they wish” –Part II

Mummy, Mummy, Happy Birthday! Happy Mother’s Day! What a surprise to get the phone call from Teddy. Mummy, I am going to close the work at Pizza shop and Gas Station early in May. I will start to travel from Port Headland to Perth. Teddy, Congratulations! You will graduate from the working holiday. Daddy and I are so proud of you since you overcome many difficulties and learn how to survive in a totally different country.

Two years ago, my elder son – Teddy, flew to Australia. That was his first time to go abroad. We never know this small step turned into the biggest step and influenced much of his life. We just sent Teddy a one way ticket, no extra money. Many people always said to us “How cruel parents you are”?

Like many young generations, Teddy also earned only 22K at a large car parts company. He could save only a little bit of money. He often works from 8:00a.m. to 9:00p.m. at the factory. One day, he told to me, “Mummy, you always encouraged us to study or go abroad. I wanted to quit my job and work in Australia.” I said to him, “my son – if you have a dream, just do your best to pursue it while you are still young. Just fly as you wish!”.

In the first few months, Teddy worked very hard at the farm in Brisbane. Helping the farmer to pick up the oranges, grapes.. Teddy and other young men worked in hot weather. Sometimes, they couldn’t work because of raining day. They often get few weeks off since there are no fruits in the season. They got only a little bit of wages, but had to pay the fee for renting the house, truck transportation and broker. Finally, I learned why Teddy worked so hard at farm when he just arrived at Australia. It was because he wished to stay one more year there. Australia Immigration probably gives another one more year working visa if young man worked at the farm for 4 months or more.

Teddy had worked in a circus at Adelaide/South Australia and the “Message shop” to help people to relax after seeing the show. He also worked at the meat processing plant at Melbourne, in the beef dept. He said it was horrible to see live bulls go into the processor and being cut to pieces. No matter how hard the works were, Teddy did his best. In Australia, if you are a specialist at something, people will respect you. Such as, if you could cut the fur of goat or fix the car very well, you could earn a handsome income.

More and more Taiwanese young generations choose to work in Australia. Teddy moved to Port Headland/Perth at the end of 2012 and stayed there for over 18 months. He even worked over 80 hours a week. At Port Headland/Perth, he worked at McDonald's, Gas station, Pizza shop, Chemical factory… He earned his first barrel of gold in his life at Port Headland.

Why young man would rather work in a strange country with different culture, language, weather than our own? You can say they are “Holidaymakers” or “Taiwanese laborers”, but they are “Adventurers”. They create the miracles in their life. They will become stronger after stimulating the energy and life experience. They will learn how to stand up from the frustration without getting help from parents or relatives. Don’t be afraid to let your children fly as they wish. The potentials are limitless!
