丹佛格柏曾在自己的官方網站中表示，這是一首親身經歷所寫的歌曲。1976 年，他回到故鄉伊利諾伊州的 Peoria 探望家人，在一家便利超商和舊愛不期而遇，驚喜之餘寫下了這首歌。
丹佛格柏 2007 年因前列腺癌過世後，這首歌曲中的真實女主角 Jill Greulich 吉兒葛列麗許接受媒體專訪，講述了更完整的故事：
1969 年，兩人相識於伍德洛夫高中，畢業後進入不同的大學。大學畢業後，吉兒結了婚並移居到芝加哥，丹佛格柏則前往科羅拉多州展開音樂事業。1976 年十二月廿四日，兩人不約而同回到故鄉過聖誕節，丹佛格柏外出購買泡愛爾蘭咖啡用的鮮奶油，吉兒則出門買蛋酒( eggnog ) 。由於開門營業的商店不多，兩人走進了同一家便利商店。然後，如同歌曲中所敘述的情節，兩人買了啤酒，在車子裡聊了兩個鐘頭之後才分手道別。
五年後，吉兒在上班開車途中，從收音機裡聽到了" Same old lang syne "這首歌，她很清楚那是他們倆的故事，但決定保持沉默，她擔心會破壞丹佛格柏的婚姻，丹佛格柏自己也拒絕透露女主角的真實身分。但她在專訪中指出，歌詞裡 的敘述有二個地方和事實有出入：第一、她的眼睛是綠色而不是藍色；第二、她的先生是位體育老師而非建築師。一般認為，這應該是丹佛格柏為了保護女方刻意改 寫的結果。
當被詢問到歌詞" She would have liked to say she loved the man, but she didn't like to lie 她很想說她愛這個男人，但又不想說謊 "的時候，吉兒並不願多談。事實上，早在這首歌曲問世後不久，她就和先生辦妥了離婚手續。
這首歌於 1981 年發行以後，在全美百大單曲排行中最高名次為第九名。由於是耶誕前夕發生的故事，它後來成為美國各大廣播電台聖誕假期最常播放的應景歌曲之一。
